After months of lack-lustre performances by India’s golden pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa, the duo seem to have found some form playing in front of the home fans. Kidambi Srikanth already played the year’s first final in Malaysia last week finds himself in the semis at the Syed Modi International Championships along with men’s doubles pair of Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar.
Return of form for Gutta-Ponappa at Syed Modi International Championships
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa have come across three matches at the Championships and have proved to be the dominant team so far. They have put up convincing performances against Heather Olver-Lauren Smith in the first round and then went on to win against Hazarika-Veludurthi pair winning in under 30 minutes.
The golden pair faced a decent challenge against Thai pair Supajirakul and Taerattanachai in a forty-five minute battle. Gutta-Ponappa managed to win in straight games 23-21, 21-17 in a close match.
Srikanth in men’s semi-final
Kidambi Srikanth defeated Malaysia’s Soon Huat Goh in a thrilling three-game match. The match lasted just over 75 minutes. He proved to be too strong for Goh in the match that could have gone in favour of either players but at the end it ended in favour of the top seed. Srikanth won 21-17, 18-21, 24-22.
