The Indian team went down 2-1 to Japan in the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone group I at the True Arena Hua Hin in Thailand.
The first match of the tie saw Eri Hozumi defeat Prarthana G. Thombare. The Japanese star won the game with a score of 6-2, 6-1 to give Japan a 1-0 lead in the early going. India pulled one back through Ankita Raina in the second match of the tie as she defeated Nao Hibino. The final score of the second match read, 6-3, 6-1.
Indian team had their hopes high for the next match as Sania Mirza paired up with Prarthana for the doubles match. Sania, who is ranked first in the world in doubles, came into the Fed cup after a successful outing in the Australian Open. Sania, however, could not carry her momentum forward.
The duo faced Shuko Aoyama and Hozumi in the crucial match and lost out with a score of 5-7, 3-6. This coupled with the 0-3 loss that India suffered against Thailand on Wednesday killed off India’s chances of qualifying for the play-offs.
The Indian team will now face Uzbekistan in their last group encounter of Fed Cup.
