The IPL 2016 Auction was held at Bengaluru earlier today, with 351 players going under the hammer. Shane Watson turned out to be the most stellar buy of this season, as he was bagged by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whooping sum of Rs 9.5 crores. Young Pawan Negi’s name created quite a stir in the morning as the franchises fought hard for him before Delhi Daredevils managed to get him for Rs 8 crores. Yuvraj Singh (Rs 7 crores), Ashish Nehra (Rs 5.5 crores) and Chris Morris (Rs 7 crores) were some of the other prolific buys of the day. Here we take a look at some of the little known cricketers who grabbed the headlines in the wake of the auction.
He is presently leading the Indian contingent in the Under 19 World Cup 2016, and is being considered as a highly useful wicket keeper batsman for the shortest format of the game. Pant’s century, today, against Namibia in the quarter finals of the U19 World Cup provided the ideal platform for his name to create a sensation at the IPL 2016 Auction. With a base price of just Rs 10 lakh, he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for a massive sum of Rs 1.9 crores.
Even though he shares his surname with India’s ace spin bowler, Murugan Ashwin was literally a ‘never heard before’ name until the IPL 2016 Auctions. The 25 year old leg break bowler generated considerable interest among the franchises, and was ultimately sold for Rs 4.5 crore (which is 45 times his base price of Rs 10 lakh!) to the Pune franchise. He has 3 First Class, 6 T20 and 2 List A matches in his repertoire to show for experience.
22 year old Ankit Rajpoot is being considered as the surprise pick of former champions Kolkata Knight Riders for this season. The Kanpur medium pacer made his debut in the domestic circuit in 2012 and has shown considerable promise of making it big. Rajpoot has played 19 T20s in his career so far, picking up 22 wickets at an economy of 6.99.
