India kept its regional supremacy intact and was crowned champions once again at the South Asian Games with a record 308 medals in front of the home crowd at Guwahati and Shillong. The hosts tally stood at 188 gold medals, 90 silver medals and 30 bronze medals. Sri Lanka finished second with 186 medals and arch-rivals Pakistan came third with 106 medals at the conclusion of the games.
This win at the 2016 South Asian Games, India extends its record to 12 time over-all champions at the competition. Since its inception in 1984, India has successfully defended the crown each time the games have taken place making India the undisputed champions at the competition. Crossing the 300 mark on the medal tally takes India to yet another landmark having won over 1500 medals at the competition.
India takes tally over 300 on final day of South Asian Games
The boxers began the procession making it a clean sweep in boxing, the women won all three medals on the final day. The men on the other hand had already secured the seven gold medals earlier in the competition. MC Mary Kom, L Sarita Devi and Pooja Rani picked up the honours for the women.
India’s judo team also showed good form bagging two gold medals and two silver medals at the competition.
