The Indo-Swiss duo has been on a roll in the women’s tennis circuit since the past year, winning match after match and tournament after tournament almost engraving their names in the history books. The duo fell short by just a couple of wins to equalize the record of Jana Novotna and Natasha Zvereva for the longest winning streak since the 1990, which stands at 44. Sania and Martina or SanTina as they are fondly called by the fans, missed the record by a whisker at 41 wins.
Their unbeaten run began at the Cincinnati Open in August, 2015 and the Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Daria Kasatkina brought it to an end in the ongoing Qatar Total Open. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis lost 6-2, 4-6, 5-10 in the quarter finals of the women’s doubles.
The loss also brings an end to their nine successive tournament wins that began with the US Open last year. And, the streak also includes WTA Finals Singapore, the Australian Open and the recently concluded St. Petersburg Ladies trophy, where they beat the Russian duo en-route to the title in straight sets in the quarters.
However, it was a whole different story for the favourites this time in a full-packed stadium with the crowd behind them. But Sania Mirza pledged to come back even stronger with Martina Hingis over the course of the season with this tweet.
