India vs New Zealand Explained.

INDIA: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah.

NEW ZEALAND: Martin Guptill, Kane Willamson (c), Colin Munro, Corey Anderson, Ross Taylor, Grant Elliott, Mitchell Santner, Luke Ronchi (wk), Nathan McCullum, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi.

New Zealand have decided to go spin-heavy while India have decided to stick to their winning combination. With three spinners in the side, one must wait and watch how well this move works for them. Tim Southee, Mitchell McClenaghan and Trent Boult are on the bench and young Adam Milne gets a chance to prove his mettle against the #1 ranked T20 team in the World.

We are done with the national anthems. Cricketers of both teams paid their tributes to the late Martin Crowe before the commencement of the match.

And here we go! Ashwin to open the bowling for India… Guptill to take strike!

OVER 1: Ashwin to Guptill, Munro and Williamson

6, W, 0, 6, 1, 0

0.1: Ashwin to Guptill, SIX! What a start to the Super 10 stage! Smashes it straight back over the bowler’s head.
0.2 Ashwin to Guptill, OUT! Guptill falls LBW to a well-disguised delivery from Ashwin.
Colin Munro in at no. 3
0.3: Ashwin to Munro no run.
0.4: Ashwin to Munro, SIX! Munro reverse-sweeps this one over backward point.
0.5: Ashwin to Munro, 1 run
0.6: Ashwin to Williamson, no run.

OVER 2: Ashish Nehra to Munro, Anderson and Williamson

1.1: Nehra to Munro, no run
1.2: Nehra to Munro, no run
1.3: Nehra to Munro, OUT! Munro mistimes a regulation delivery from Nehra and the ball flies off the toe-end of the bat. Hardik Pandya at mid-off completes an easy catch.

1.5: Nehra to Anderson, 1 legbye
1.6: Nehra to Williamson, no run

OVER 8: Bumrah to Taylor and Anderson

New Zealand 42/3 after 8 overs. Batting on this Nagpur wicket has not been easy so far. A score of 145-150 may prove to be a competitive one.

OVER 9: Raina to Taylor and Anderson

2 1 1 2 0 1

New Zealand 49/3 after 9 overs. Anderson 25 (25), Taylor 2 (5)

Ashwin (3-0-26-1) back into the attack.

OVER 10: Ashwin to Taylor and Anderson

1 0 0 4 1 0

New Zealand 55/3 after 10 overs.

“Halfway through the New Zealand innings and the visitors have struggled to score runs so far. With Williamson, Guptill and Munro back in the hut, the onus is on Corey Anderson to play the anchor role. For India, the bowlers have done their job and Dhoni has more options to work with; thanks to the spin-friendly Nagpur pitch.”

Ravindra Jadeja, left arm spin, into the attack

OVER 11: Jadeja to Anderson and Taylor

0 1 1 1 1 0

New Zealand 59/3 after 11 overs.

OVER 12: Raina to Anderson, Taylor and Santner

The ball turning sharply as we move further into the game. New Zealand 75/4 after 13 overs. The Kiwis have to up the ante in order to post a competitive score as time is running out.

OVER 14: Raina to Santner and Anderson

0 1 1 1 0 0

That brings an end to a brilliant spell from Suresh Raina (4-0-16-1). New Zealand at 78/4 after 14 overs.

Hardik Pandya, right arm medium, comes into the attack.

OVER 15: Pandya to Anderson and Santner

0 wd 4 1 1 2 1

New Zealand 88/4 from 15 overs. 10 runs an over from here will take them to 138 and the Kiwis need to target that score. Anderson still in the middle.

Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack. Expect some toe-crushing yorkers now!

OVER 16: Bumrah to Anderson, Santner and Elliott

1 0 0 W 0 1

Corey Anderson b Bumrah 34(42). A brilliant yorker from Bumrah has Anderson beaten all ends up and the middle stump has been uprooted.

New Zealand 90/5 after 16 overs. Run rate 5.2 runs per over.

OVER 17: Jadeja to Santner, Elliott and Ronchi

1 2 wd 4 W 0 0

Mitchell Santner c Dhoni b Jadeja 18(17). A mistimed shot finds the top edge and goes straight in the air and skipper Dhoni completes a comfortable catch.

New Zealand 98/6 after 17 overs.

OVER 18: Bumrah to Elliott and Ronchi

0 2 1 1 0 1

Bumrah (4-0-15-1) completes yet another impressive bowling spell. This guy has been a real find for India and has a long way to go! New Zealand stuttering at 103-6 after 18 overs.

OVER 19: Jadeja to Elliott and Ronchi

0 1 4 1 1 1

Jadeja (4-0-26-1) completes his spell and New Zealand are on 111/6 after 19 overs. They have to make the most of the last 6 deliveries to be bowled by Ashish Nehra, in all probability.

Ashish Nehra to bowl the last over

OVER 20: Nehra to Elliott and Ronchi

1 1 1W 4 6 2

Grant Elliott run out (Dhawan/Nehra) 9(12)

And the Kiwis have been restricted to 126/7 after 20 overs. Thanks to a superlative performance from the Indian bowlers.

” Well one had not expected the New Zealand innings to go this way after that confident-looking six in the very first ball of the match. The Indian bowling department has done remarkably well to get rid of the dangerous Kiwi batsmen at regular intervals. Suresh Raina turned out to be an excellent part-timer and he finished his quota of 4 overs having conceded only 16 runs. He also picked up the important wickets of Williamson and Taylor.”

So, will the Indian batsmen make short work of this run-chase or will the New Zealand bowlers be able to put up a fight? Stay tuned for the 2nd innings.

Match Summary:

Corey Anderson 34(42) Jasprit Bumrah 4-0-15-1
Luke Ronchi  21*(11) Suresh Raina 4-0-16-1
Mitchell Santner 18 (17) Ravindra Jadeja 4-0-26-1

Hello and welcome back to the run chase. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are walking out for the run chase. Nathan McCullum, the off spinner to open the bowling.

India 6/1 after 1 over. Need to 122 to win from 114 balls

Corey Anderson, left-arm medium fast, comes into the attack.

OVER 2: Anderson to Kohli and Sharma

2 1 0 0 1 0

India 10-1 after 2 overs. Run rate 5.00 runs per over. Need 118 to win from 108 balls.

Mitchell Santner, left-arm orthodox is introduced into the attack.

OVER 3: Santner to Rohit, Kohli, Raina and Yuvraj

0 W 1 1 W 0

Rohit Sharma st Ronchi b Santner 5(7). Game on! New Zealand won’t let the Indians chase this down so easily. Patience is the key here and the Indian batsmen need to realise that.

Suresh Raina c Guptill b Santner 1(2). And Santner strikes again!! This time he gets rid of the dangerous Raina and India are reduced to 12/3 in no time. 128 suddenly looks like a big total now.

India 12-3 after 3 overs after a brilliant first over from Mitchell Santner. Yuvraj Singh joins Kohli in the middle and India need 116 to win from 102 balls.

OVER 4: Anderson to Kohli and Yuvraj

0 4 0 4 1 0

Virat Kohli breaks the shackles with two handsome-looking boundaries off Anderson. India 21/3 after 4 overs. Need 107 to win from 96 balls.

OVER 5: Nathan McCullum to Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhoni

0 1 0 4 W 0

Yuvraj Singh c&b Nathan Mccullum 4(5). India are in big, big trouble. They are down to 26/4 from 5 overs and face an uphill task hereon. Need 102 runs to win from 90 balls.

Grant Elliott, right-arm medium, into the attack.

OVER 6: Elliott to Kohli and Dhoni

0 0 1 0 1 1

A nice, tight over from Elliott and India are 29/4 after 6 overs and this is their worst powerplay score in a long time. Need 99 runs from 84 balls.

Williamson decides to unleash the lone pacer in his side. Adam Milne, right-arm fast, comes into the attack.

OVER 7: Milne to Kohli and Dhoni

nb 0 0 0 1 1 1

Just three runs off that over. India 33/4 after 7 overs. Need 94 runs from 78 balls.

OVER 8: Elliott to Kohli and Dhoni

wd 1 1 0 2 1 0

Kohli 23(26) settling down into the wicket. He has to bat till the end if India are to win this one. India need 89 from 72 balls.

Another spinner, Ish Sodhi, is introduced into the attack.

OVER 9: Sodhi to Kohli, Pandya and Dhoni

W 0 0 0 1 1

Virat Kohli c Ronchi b Sodhi 23(27).

Sodhi gets the prized wicket of Virat Kohli off his first ball and India’s chances of winning this game look bleak. India 41/5 after 9 overs. Need 86 from 66 balls.

Mitchell Santner is back into the attack.

OVER 10: Santner to Dhoni, Pandya and Jadeja

1 0 0 W 0 0

Hardik Pandya LBW b Santner 1(7).

New Zealand are finishing this up quickly! I doubt whether India will even survive 20 overs on a track like this.

OVER 11: Sodhi to Dhoni, Jadeja and Ashwin

1 W 0 0 1 1

Ravindra Jadeja c&b Sodhi 0(3).

None of the Indian batsmen have been able to capitalise on the Kiwi spin attack. India are 45/7 after 11 overs and need 82 to win from 54 balls.

Nathan McCullum is back into the attack.

OVER 12: McCullum to Dhoni and Ashwin

0 1 0 1 1 1

OVER 13: Adam Milne to Ashwin and Dhoni

1 1 1 1 0 0

India somehow get past the 50-run mark. They are on 53/7 after 13 overs and need 74 runs in 42 balls. Not impossible but they have lost too many wickets.

OVER 14: Santner to Dhoni and Ashwin

1 0 1 0 1 1

Santner’s bowling figures read 3-0-7-3. How good is that! India are 57/7 and they need 70 runs in the last six overs. Dhoni has to shift gears in the next over.

OVER 15: Sodhi to Ashwin and Dhoni

0 0 1 2 1 0

India 61/7 after 15 overs. That is not even fifty percent of New Zealand’s total! 66 more needed from just 30 balls. Looks like it’s all over for India as Dhoni has not been allowed to attack the opposition whatsoever. The Nagpur crowd is in a state of shock as they cannot believe what is happening.

Anderson back into the attack

OVER 16: Anderson to Ashwin and Dhoni

0 1 1 1 1 1

India 66/7 after 16 overs. This is a group stage and the Net Run Rate will be an important factor throughout. India must try and get as close as possible to the total in order to avoid a big blow in terms of NRR.

OVER 17: Ish Sodhi to Dhoni, Ashwin and Nehra

6 1 W 0 wd 0 wd

R Ashwin st Ronchi b Sodhi 10(20).

New Zealand have nearly sealed a win here and it is just the victory margin that needs to be determined.

OVER 18: Mitchell Santner to Dhoni and Bumrah

4 0 0 W 0 0

MS Dhoni c Nathan McCullum b Santner 30(30).

The Indian captain’s long fight comes to an end. India on 79/9, 47 runs away from victory. Mitchell Santner is my man of the match! A career-defining performance with bowling figures reading 4-0-11-4.

OVER 19: Adam Milne to Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra b Milne 0(4).

And Milne seals a comprehensive win for New Zealand. The best T20 side in the world have been bundled out for a paltry 79. New Zealand kickstart their T20 World cup campaign with a big win.

“9 out of 10 Indian wickets were picked up by spinners and the New Zealand team management’s bold decision of playing three spinners has worked wonders. Nothing seemed right for India right from the start as they lost more than half their side inside the first ten overs. Barring Kohli and Dhoni, none of the batsmen showed application.

Mitchell Santner is the man of the match for his match-winning spell of 4-11.

Match Summary:

New Zealand- 126/7 (20)
Corey Anderson 34 (42) Jasprit Bumrah 1-15
