Preview: India vs Bangladesh

By Debotosh Chatterjee.

The India v Bangladesh match in the ICC World T20 2016, today, is going to be the third encounter between the two teams this year. And despite the focus on the evolution of Bangladesh cricket, India have been worthy victors on both occasions. Having already lost their first couple of games in this World Cup, Bangladesh are now at the brink of desperation. India, on the other hand, seemed to have revitalized their campaign with a comprehensive victory against arch rivals Pakistan last week.

No Taskin, No winning momentum, No home conditions for Bangladesh

In the last couple of years, Bangladesh have proven to be quite a handful at home. However, when it comes to their overseas record, they still remain as helpless and lackluster as ever. And the stark contrast in the team’s performance in the Asia Cup last month and the ongoing World T20 exemplifies it. After being outplayed by Pakistan in their first game, Mortaza’s men did manage to put up a fight against the Aussies. However, with their top order at its shakiest, Bangladesh cannot hope to upset stronger opponents in the next few games. Tamim Iqbal’s injury and Soumya Sarkar’s lack of form has taken away the aggression and sting that is so necessary at the top of the order. To make things worse, the bowling department has been rattled by the absence of Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny. In short, this makes the task of Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman all the more important. The welcome return of Mustafizur Rahman and his well known ability to cause problems for Indian batsmen might be Bangladesh’s best hope going into this do or die contest against India.

India eye semi finals spot

New Zealand are already through. Pakistan and Australia do not look convincing enough. This gives India the opportunity to virtually seal a spot for the semi finals, by registering a comprehensive victory against Bangladesh. With the Net Run Rate factor expected to play a big role in the qualification battle in the next few days, India would aim to improve their figures which were battered by New Zealand in the first game.

A Virat Kohli masterclass, however, has given the Men In Blue their all familiar feeling of superiority at home. While the bowlers have performed well in the first two games, it is the batting department that the Indians should be worried about. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina have looked quite ordinary at the top, while Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja do not appear well prepared to undergo the spin test that the World T20 tracks have offered so far. This has put pressure on the shoulders of Virat Kohli to carry his team through during difficult circumstances. Yuvraj Singh has shown some fight in the middle order, and this should be heartening for the hosts. With Bangladesh apparently ill prepared to put up a tough challenge, the out of form Indian top order should use the occasion to spend some productive time in the middle.

BANGLADESH WON THE TOSS AND ELECTED TO FIELD

Playing XI:

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah.

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Mithun, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Shuvagata Hom, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Al-Amin Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman.

INDIA NEED TO WIN THIS GAME BY 50+ RUNS IF THEY ARE TO GO PAST AUSTRALIA AND PAKISTAN IN THE POINTS TABLE.

“We’ve been playing on turners for a long time now. Hopefully this will remain a flat wicket and we will be able to hit more boundaries here.” says Shikhar Dhawan.

It’s time for the national anthems of both the teams. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, traditionally being a high scoring ground, a 180 plus total is certainly on the cards for Bangladesh if they have to stay in the race for World T20 glory.

Mortaza takes the new ball, Rohit on strike….

OVER 1:

1 1 wd 0 1 1 0

End of over 1. India 5 for no loss. A nice tight over from the Bangladeshi skipper.

Shuvagata Hom, right-arm offbreak, comes into the attack.

OVER 2:

0 0 0 4 0 0

Just a boundary came off that over. India off to a cautious start with 9/0 in 2overs. Al-Amin Hossain to bowl next…

OVER 3:

4 1 1 1 1 0

Al-Amin goes for 9 in his first over. India 17/0 in 3 overs. Another change! Mustafizur Rahman, left-arm fast comes into the attack..

OVER 4:

Dhawan sends one over the infield to make it 6 from the over. Shakib Al Hasan, left-arm orthodox, into the attack.

OVER 5:

0 1 1 0 1 1

Good start for Shakib. 5 overs and 5 bowlers have already bowled for Bangladesh! Mustafizur to continue..

OVER 6:

1 6 1 6 1lb W

Rohit Sharma c Sabbir b Mustafizur 18(16). Mustafizur delivers after an expensive start to the over. At the end of the batting powerplay, India are 42/1. Shakib to continue..

OVER 7:

0 0 1 1 1 W

Shikhar Dhawan LBW b Shakib 23(22). Shakib traps Dhawan leg-before and the Indian openers have thrown away yet another start. Mortaza to bowl the 8th over.

OVER 8:

2 1 0 0 0 1

Another good over from Mortaza. 160 seems to be a safe score looking at the way the wicket is behaving at the moment. India 49/2 after 8 overs. Hom back into the attack.

OVER 9:

1 0 2 0 0 0

The Bangladeshi bowlers tightening the grip now. India get past the 50-run mark in the ninth over. Mortaza to bowl his third..

OVER 10:

1 1 1 2 1 1

Halfway through, India 59/2. Bangladesh have done well to keep the Indian batsmen under check.

OVER 11:

1 0 0 6 6 0

Al-Amin misses a caught-and-bowled opportunity to get rid of Kohli and Raina smashes him for two sixes in return! It’s all happening here in Bengaluru. India finally breaking the shackles… Mortaza to complete his spell..

OVER 12:

0 2 1 1 1 1

And the Bangladeshi skipper completes a disciplined spell. He finishes with figures of 4-0-22-0.. Shakib back into the attack to bowl his third.

OVER 13:

1 1 1 0 1 1

Shakib has bowled exceptionally well keeping the conditions in mind. He is yet to concede a boundary. India 84/2 after 13 overs. Hom replaces Mortaza..

OVER 14:

4 1 6 W 0 6

Virat Kohli b Hom 24(24). Kohli perishes after hitting Hom for a six. This may prove costly for India.. Hardik Pandya is the new man in and he slams the spinner for a six off his second ball! Time for some “Pandyatainment” now!

OVER 15:

1 1 1 0 4 4

Pandya scores back to back boundaries off Shakib to slightly disturb the left-armer’s bowling numbers. He finishes with figures of 4-0-23-1.

Al-Amin back into the attack.

OVER 16:

W W 2 0 0 0

Suresh Raina c Sabbir b Al Amin 30(23).

Hardik Pandya c Soumya b Al Amin 15(7). A brilliant over from Al-Amin as he conceded just 2 runs and gets both the set batsmen out. This may be the difference between victory and defeat for India. Full marks for Soumya Sarkar for pulling off a blinder at deep mid-wicket to get rid of Pandya.

Mortaza wants more spinners to bowl for him! Mahmudullah comes into the attack now.

OVER 17:

1 1 0 1 W 1

Yuvraj Singh c Al-Amin b Mahmudullah 3(6). It’s all falling apart for the men in blue. They cannot afford to lose this one. The onus is on MS Dhoni to take India to a decent total..

OVER 18:

1 2 0 1 1 0

India struggling at 123/6 after 18 overs. They have to make full use of the remaining 12 balls.. Al Amin to continue…

OVER 19:

0 4 1lb 4 4 1

Mustafizur to bowl the final over..

OVER 20:

W 4 1 2 0 2

Ravindra Jadeja b Mustafizur 12(8). Mustafizur sends Jadeja’s stumps cartwheeling as India slump into trouble.. Who expected the Bangalore track to turn out this way? India post 146/7 after 20 overs. I feel this is at least 10-15 runs less than the par score on this wicket.

Mid-match analysis:

So India manage only 146 for the loss of 7 wickets. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma got India off to a steady start but were dismissed in successive overs. Raina and Kohli then added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket before the latter fell to Shuvagata Hom after scoring 24 runs. Hardik Pandya struck a couple of lusty blows to turn things back in India’s favour but Al-Amin Hossain had other plans as he dismissed both Raina and Pandya off successive balls. Yuvra Singh too seemed off-colour and hardly troubled the scorers. Dhoni, Jadeja and Ashwin scored some vital runs in the death overs to guide India to what looks like a below-par total.

Bangladesh were brilliant with the ball as they bowled according to the field and in the right areas. The bowling at the death was spot-on and both Al Amin and Mustafizur caused trouble for MS Dhoni who is rated as one of the best finishers of the game.

Winning by a big margin remains more or less out of the question for India but will they manage to get two points from this game? Stay tuned to find out as the run-chase gets underway.

Match summary:

INDIA 146/7 (20) BANGLADESH
Raina 30(23) Mustafizur 2-34 (4)
Kohli 24(24) Al Amin 2-37 (4)
Dhawan 23(22) Mahmudullah 1-4 (1)

BANGLADESH NEED 147 RUNS TO WIN FROM 20 OVERS @ 7.35 RUNS PER OVER.

Welcome back! Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Mithun walk out in the middle to get things started off. Ashish Nehra to open the bowling for India.

OVER 1:

4 0 0 2 0 1

OVER 2:

0 0 1 0 1 1

OVER 3:

1 W 1 0 0 0

Mohammad Mithun c Pandya b Ashwin 1(3). Ashwin strikes second ball! Forces Mithun to charge him down the track only to find Pandya at long-on. Bangladesh at 12/1 after 3 overs.

Ashish Nehra to continue..

OVER 4:

3 0 2 1 1 1

Nehra goes for eight in his second over. Bangladesh at 20/1 after 4 overs.

OVER 5:

0 1 1 1 0 6

Bumrah drops Tamim in this all-important encounter! How costly is this gonna be?

OVER 6:

4 0 4 0 4 4

Jasprit Bumrah is having a bad, bad day! as Tamim hammers him for four boundaries in his over.

OVER 7:

1 1 0 4 1 1

Bangladesh negating the Ashwin effect now. They are way ahead of the required run rate at the moment.

OVER 8:

0 1 1lb W 1 0

Tamim Iqbal st Dhoni b Jadeja 35(32). Jadeja strikes in his first over! Gets rid of the well-set Tamim Iqbal with a brilliant delivery.

Hardik Pandya, right arm medium fast, comes into the attack:

OVER 9:

2 0 1 4 4 0

Sabbir gets two lucky boundaries off Pandya. Bangladesh look good to chase the total down. I would call this a 70-30 in favour of Bangladesh.

Suresh Raina, right-arm offbreak comes into the attack.

OVER 10:

0 1 wdW 1lb 1 6 0

Sabbir Rahman st Dhoni b Raina 26(15). Raina gives India the breakthrough! And, surprise surprise! Mashrafe Mortaza has come in to bat! And he smashes Raina for a huge six.

Hardik Pandya back into the attack..

OVER 11:

2 0 1 1lb 6 0

Ashwin drops Shakib Al Hasan of all people! India are not having a good day in the field today.

Jadeja back into the attack:

OVER 12:

W 0 1 6 1 0

Masrafe Mortaza b Jadeja 6(5). And Mortaza’s short stay at the crease comes to an end. Makes room to smash one over extra cover but sees the ball crash into the stumps. Shakib keeping Bangladesh on track..

R Ashwin back into the attack..

OVER 13:

W 0 0 0 0 1

Shakib Al Hasan c Raina b Ashwin 21(16). And Ashwin breathes life into this game! Gets rid of the dangerous-looking Shakib and concedes just 1 run off this over.. Brilliant!

Jadeja to continue..

OVER 14:

0 1 0 2 0 0

Tight over from Jadeja and India not letting go of this so easily..

Ashish Nehra back into the attack..

OVER 15:

1 1 1lb 1 1 0

Just five runs this over and this match can swing eitherways! Jadeja to complete his spell now

OVER 16:

6 0 1 1lb 1 0.

Jadeja finishes his spell with figures of 4-0-22-0. 34 needed from 24 and India have too little to defend I reckon! Bumrah to bowl the 17th over.

OVER 17:

2 1 0 2 1 1

Bumrah getting his yorkers right and the fielders complementing him well! 27 needed from the last 3 overs. This is still anybody’s game. The Indians need to hold on to this one.

OVER 18:

0 4 1 1 W 4

Soumya Sarkar c Kohli b Nehra 21(21). Nehra gets rid of Sarkar but concedes 2 boundaries! Is this a bit too late for India? Bumrah to bowl the deciding over.

OVER 19:

1 1 1 1 1 1

Who will bowl the last over? 11 needed from 6. India have done well to come back in this contest after conceding a truckload of runs in the initial half of the Bangladesh innings. It is Hardik Pandya! The most expensive bowler of the night will be bowling the over which matters the most for his team.

OVER 20:

1 4 4 W W W

Mushfiqur Rahim c Dhawan b Pandya 11(6).  Rahim has done his job! Probably too late for India

Mahmudullah c Jadeja b Pandya 18(22). Oh Dear! There’s a twist! Pandya on a hat-trick

Mustafizur run out (Dhoni) 0(0). India have done the impossible here! Hardik Pandya has bowled the over of his life and India have won this by 1 run!

Post-match analysis:

What on earth happened in that last over?!?! Bangladesh had the match in their hands but foolish shotmaking cost them the match. Kudos to Jadeja and Dhoni for inflicting the last two dismissals and Hardik Pandya is certainly the man of the moment!

Bangladesh started off the chase in the right fashion, belting 45 runs in the first six overs. They were also helped by a couple of dropped chances from Bumrah and Ashwin. The Indian spinners then brought things under control with some economical bowling and timely wickets. Shakib, Sarkar and Mahmudullah played handy cameos but could not stay till the end. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 2 boundaries in the last over and brought the equation down to 2 runs from 3 balls. Three wickets fell thereon and the Indians scripted a memorable win and more importantly, kept their hopes of winning a second T20 World Cup alive.

Man of the match:

Ravichandran Ashwin is the man of the match for his bowling figures of 4-0-20-2 which also included his magical last over where he conceded just 1 run and dismissed Shakib Al Hasan.

Match summary:

INDIA 146/7 BANGLADESH
Raina 30 Mutafizur 2-34
Kohli 24 Al Amin 2-37
Dhawan 23 Mahmudullah 1-4
BANGLADESH 145/9 INDIA
Tamim 35 Ashwin 2-20
Sabbir 26 Jadeja 2-22
Shakib 22 Pandya 2-29

So India move up to the 2nd position after this thrilling 1-run win vs Bangladesh. They next meet Australia in Mohali on March 27th. Sadly, it is the end of the road for Bangladesh as they bow out having put up such a strong fight.
