It’s a brand new season in the Indian Premier League. But the fortunes of Kings XI Punjab do not seem to have undergone any refreshing changes whatsoever. KXIP were off to yet another demoralizing start to their IPL campaign, as they lost both their opening matches quite comprehensively. And on both occasions, the Kings were outplayed in all departments of the game.
Is David Miller really cut out for the captain’s job?
Notwithstanding his contributions to the team as a stellar batsman, David Miller is yet to prove his mettle as a captain in any format of the game. Besides, with limited exposure to the nuances of leadership, Miller cannot be realistically expected to lead so diverse a side. Add to that the fact that Kings XI Punjab have not made any quality addition to their side in the recent auctions. Thus, this remains the same team that had failed to get going throughout the last season. A similar stretch of dry run had become Kolkata Knight Riders’s nemesis in the 2009 season, and handing over the captaincy to a then greenhorn Brendon McCullum had not done the side any good. Given the demands of a high intensity tournament like the IPL, the Kings XI Punjab team management seriously need to consider the efficacy of Miller as the captain before it’s too late once again!
A dysfunctional middle order
A combination of Shaun Marsh, David Miller and Glenn Maxwell might seem overwhelmingly powerful to the opposition on any given day. However, to the utter misfortune of the Punjab outfit, their middle order has been failing in all dimensions for quite some time. None of the batsmen have been able to anchor the innings or go ballistic on all fronts. Consequently, the lower middle order’s role has become literally defunct, despite the presence of promising talents like Axar Patel and IPL 2014 Final’s centurion Wriddhiman Saha. Clearly, the entire batting system needs a complete rejig, and each of the batsmen need to be made aware of their specific role in the unit. Perhaps the charismatic Virender Sehwag, the mentor of KXIP, can have a thing or two to say on this.
Kings XI Punjab are yet to register any points on the table this year. They have looked quite ordinary so far, and if the heads do not start rolling at the earliest, the fans might be in for yet another disappointing season.
