I-League 2017: Chennai, Punjab Debut In Season 10


Indian football action gets underway this new year as the Hero I-League enters its 10th season. The I-League has managed to produce the best footballing talent in the country season after season and continues to do so. This year we will see teams from all regions of the country compete for Indian football’s most prestigious crown. From the East and the North East we have Mohun Bagan, Kingfisher East Bengal FC, Shillong Lajong and Aizawl FC while Mumbai FC, DSK Shivajians and Churchill Brothers Goa FC constitute the West. We also have JSW Bengaluru FC, the defending champions and first-timers Chennai City FC from the South and Minerva Punjab FC, the only team representing Northern India make their I-League debut.

“The Dream Was To Have A Football Club From Chennai”- Rohit Ramesh (Chennai City FC):

Rohit Ramesh took up the Nethaji Sports Club, one of Chennai’s most prestigious clubs of this kind. Late Mr. TR Govindarajan showed interest in his idea of discovering and developing football talent in Tamil Nadu and as a result of their belief and hard work, Chennai City FC are less than a week away from making their I-League debut. The team will be led by Dharmaraj Ravanan, who has represented reputed Indian clubs such as Churchill Brothers and Sporting Cube de Goa. He was also part of the Pune franchise in the Indian Super League. The club also boasts of a host of talented local lads.

Football Lovers Of Punjab Now Have A Team To Get Behind And They Are Excited- Ranjit Bajaj (Minerva Punjab FC)

After JCT Phagwara FC of Ludhiana, Punjab are back into the I-League scene with Minerva Punjab FC, who are set to make their debut in India’s most prestigious football competition. They made their I-League 2nd division debut last year and finished as runners-up.  They were also crowned champions of the AIFF under-15 Youth League and were instrumental in contributing some players from their Youth Development Programme to India’s Under-17 World Cup team. Backed by fans across the Northern part of India, Minerva Punjab FC are ready for kickoff and they would aim for a respectable debut performance.
