Displaying controlled aggression, the Indian Junior Hockey team (Under-21) team thumped Australia 6-2. India won four out of five league matches and have reached the final of the 4th Sultan of Johor Cup. It was a highly entertaining attacking display from the Indian colts. Led by Harmanpreet Singh’s hattrick, the Indian team shell shocked the Australian defence and set up a final showdown versus Great Britain.
Harmanpreet Singh opens India’s account
Harmanpreet Singh who had a hattrick in India’s last league match versus Malaysia as well, was the architect of India’s attack. He converted from a penalty corner as early as the 6th minute to give India the lead.
Parvinder Singh makes it 2-0
India piled the pressure on the Aussies with their second goal just three minutes later. This time the scorer was Parvinder Singh who superbly deflected a pass from Santa Singh to double the score 2-0.
Simranjeet Singh and Pawan Kumar add to the scoring spree
The third goal came from midfielder Simranjeet Singh’s stick who pierced through the Australian defence in the 19th minute to make it 3-0. India kept up the relentless attack and looked to score at every opportunity. Their next chance came just four minutes later in the 23rd minute as Pawan Kumar’s shot found the net that put India well ahead at 4-0.
Aussies get one back but India keeps the lead
Australia earned their first chance to score only at the 25th minute as Brandan Horner converted a penalty corner. But their joy proved short-lived as India scored another goal soon after the goal by Australia.
in the 27th minute, Varun Kumar’s penalty corner was improperly stopped by the Aussie defenders due to which India was awarded a penalty stroke . Harmanpreet Singh duly converted it to give India a massive lead of 5-1 already in the first half.
Harmanpreet completes hat-trick
Australia looked to have come prepared to tackle the Indian attack better in the second half but they couldn’t keep the Indians in check for long. The Indian colts earned their first opportunity of the second half as early as the 44th minute. It was once again Harmanpreet Singh who converted a penalty corner to have his second hat-trick of the tournament and put India ahead 6-1.
Consolation goal for Aussies
With the match looking firmly in India’s grip, the Aussies got a chance to score a consolation goal six minutes from full time. Brandan Horner converted a penalty corner and scored his second goal of the match to make the final score 6-2 in favour of the Indians.
Final on Sunday
The Indian Junior Hockey team will hope to carry on with the same momentum and retain the title versus Great Britain on Sunday. India lost to Great Britain in the group matches but will look to come back stronger as they have been impressive in their last few matches.
