NorthEast United vs Goa FC: Points Shared In Controversial Draw

The match at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, saw everything: a controversial penalty, quick-paced football and some rugged defending. But it was not enough to separate the two sides as Northeast United vs Goa FC ended in a 1-1 draw on Day 8 of the Indian Super League . NorthEast United came from behind to level the game and after the equalizer, neither team could find a way through after that.

The possession was divided almost equally but John Abraham’s Northeast United FC had a slight edge with 51% of their time on the ball. While Goa FC had one more shot than Northeast United FC, they lacked accuracy with only 5 out of their 10 shots on target.

Shaky Start by Northeast United

Northeast United FC’s start was shaky as they were probably recovering from a 0-2 defeat suffered at home against Atletico de Kolkata. In the early minutes, the Northeast goal keeper Rehenesh had to rush and make a quick clearance after the  midfielder Dong-Hyun made a horrible back pass. However a mistake by Rehenesh in the 17th minute gave FC Goa the lead. He failed to hold on to what should have been an easy catch from an Andre Santos free kick that eventually saw Gregory Arnolin score from the 6 yard box.

Equalizer by the Northeast United Team

After conceding the first goal the hosts tried hard to find a way to get back into the game but their efforts were defended well by a resilient Goa FC defence. Clifford Miranda’s cross in the 24th minute was sent for a corner by Garcia in the Goa defence. The Goan side looked quite content trying to defend the single goal lead but that strategy prove fatal for Goa. In the 34th minute the Canadian referee D. Gantar pointed to the spot for Debarata Roy’s aerial challenge on Gurung. There was a fair amount of controversy about that decision but Koke converted from the penalty kick and put his team back in the lead.

Both the teams continued to attack after that but failed to find a goal. Northeast United pressed the Goan defence more frequently in the second half but were met with a matching reply and the Goalkeeper made good saves to earn Goa FC their first points of the tournament.

With this result , Northeast United continued their impressive performance in the tournament. At the same time the Goa team got of their duck and one hopes for better results from Zico and his men !
