After a stunning 2-1 win last Wednesday, the Indian men’s hockey team caused another major upset as they defeated world champions Australia 1-0 in the third game of the 4-match test series at the Perth hockey stadium in Perth on Saturday. The Indians are beaming with confidence after the back to back wins and would look to take the series.
Goalless First Half:
Rupinder Pal Singh, who played his 100th international for India, led the side in the absence of regular captain Sardar Singh. The first two quarters of the game saw both the teams launching pacy attacks and many chances being created on both ends. The defenders had a great evening as they were flawless with their challenges and blocks. The first two quarters ended without a goal.
Second Half- Sunil Strikes To Give India The Edge:
Early in the second half, SV Sunil dribbled past the Australian defense and put the ball through for Akashdeep Singh. Akashdeep completed a quick one-two by passing the ball back to Sunil, who skilfully cut past the Australian defense and netted a smart goal to give India a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. India attacked more aggressively after the goal and the duo carried on their impressive run in the series.
Things got worse for the hosts when Eddie Hockenden was sent off by the referee for an unfair tackle on Manpreet Singh. The Australian forwards tried every possible move to get past the Indian defense but couldn’t successfully do so. The final whistle was blown and the Indian Men’s hockey team walked away with another victory over the world champions. The next match will be played on Sunday,9 November.
India are up against an Aussie side which is missing stalwarts like Jamie Dwyer due to injury. But to beat Australia on their home ground is indeed creditable and it reverses a trend of defeats against the World Champions. Way to go Indian Hockey !
