Devendro, Bidhuri Awarded World Series Boxing Contracts

A step in the right direction for Indian Boxing. Devendro and Gaurav Bidhuri became the first Indian boxers to be awarded a full contract in World Series Boxing. The Glasgow Commonwealth Games Silver medalist Devendro Singh was signed by Poland Hussars and Gaurav Bidhuri was signed by the previous year’s victorious Italian side that is now called Italia Thunders. Both of them have been signed on 2-year contracts and will be guaranteed a minimum of six matches. Devendro will play in the 49kg category and Bidhuri will take part in the 52 kg category. The season will begin on January 16.

Devendro Singh (R) and Gaurav Bidhri (L) became the first Indian boxers to sign full season contracts with International teams in World Series.

Looking at the opportunities that have opened up in front of him Devendro told PTI

“I am so excited about the prospect of competing in this tournament. It is a huge opportunity for me because I can also grab an Olympic berth if I do well.”

Exposure through World Series Boxing

An entry into World Series Boxing will provide these young Indian boxers with world class exposure. That has surely been missing to a large extent. The performance of Indian boxers against European and American boxers has not been up to a good level. Now they have a chance of playing against and with the best of these boxers and to learn new techniques.

For Devendro this will be the first ever taste of the World Series. Gaurav Bidhuri had earlier fought one bout for the Indian team Mumbai Fighters in 2012. He beat Russian Vladimir Nikitin in the bout. Talking about the importance of the event, he said

“I learned to think in the ring. Even when I am under pressure, I have learnt how to keep my strategy and stay cool.”

Indian sports enthusiasts will hope that the two boxers shine at World Series and bring more glory for Indian boxing. Sports Rediscovered wishes them luck.
