All Win Day For India At Women’s World Boxing Championship

It was all smiles for Indian contingent on the third day of Women’s World Boxing Championship. Manipur duo Shamjetsabam Sarjubala (48kg) and Maisnam Meena Kumari (54kg) booked their places in the second round of the prestigious tournament on Tuesday.

Day Three Results

Both boxers scored emphatic victories over their opponents. They were adjudged winners by unanimous decision.

Gold medallist at the inaugural AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in 2012 , Sarjubala beat inexperienced Grazieli de Jesus Sousa of Brazil. The bout was scored 10-9 in favor of Sarjubala by each of the 4 judges in all the 3 rounds. Final score was 40-36;40-36;40-36. Sarjubala is seen as one of the favorites for the gold medal in this weight category of the tournament.

Meena Kumari has come into this tournament with her confidence high. She won the Gold medal at the Women’s nationals in October by defeating Asian Championship silver medallist Sonia Lather in the final. Putting that confidence on display, Meena Kumari out boxed Ethipoian Felekech Seifu Gebremedihin in the 54kg category. The match was both boxer’s international debut but Meena Kumari showed much more experience and Gebremedihin could never settle into the match. She took the three rounds 10-8 and final scorecard read 40-33;40-33;40-33.

Raipur’s most promising boxer will hope to continue her winning streak into this tournament against some of the biggest names like Nicola Adams and Leonela Sanchez.

India At Women’s World Boxing Championship So Far

On day two of the tournament two boxers progressed to the second round while two of the boxers were beaten in the first round. Pinky Rani, who is substituting Mary Kom in the flyweight (51kg) category beat China’s Haijuan in a unanimous decision. Pwilao Basumatary was also a winner by unanimous decision against Kathrine Arauz of Costa Rica.

Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg) and Neetu Chahal (69kg) lost to China’s Yin Junhua and Panama’s Atheyna Bylon in their respective bouts.

In total, four boxers (Pinky Jangra, Basumatary, Sarjubala, Meena Kumari) have qualified for the pre-quarters.

In Action on Wednesday

Haryana’s Monica Saun and Saweety will take the ring for the first time in the tournament on Wednesday. Monica will face Li Qian of China in the Middleweight (75kg) category and Saweety (81kg) will be up against the Netherlands’ Mavine Koelemeij.

Pinki Rani will be back in action for her round 2 match against Sagataeva Saiana of Russia.
