As reported by The Hindu, Luka, Jaisha and Kaur become the first few athletes to qualify for the elite event after the world body IAAF revealed the new entry standards for the World Championships. The qualification period began on 1st October, 2014.

Tintu Luka missed out in 2013 Worlds

Fortune smiled on Tintu Luka this time after her desperate efforts resulted in failure to qualify for the 2013 World Championships. Her silver-winning feat in 800m at the Asian Games this year happened to be on 1st October itself and the pace she set was well within the qualification time.

The qualifying criterion for the women’s 800m is 2:01s while Luka’s timing at Incheon was 1:59.19s.

Relieved PT Usha

Tintu’s hard work and dedication are paying off. Her latest achievement of qualifying for the Worlds validates it further. Her coach, the illustrious PT Usha too was very relieved and happy at this latest accomplishment of her ward.

’That takes a lot of pressure off Tintu and me,” PT Usha told The Hindu on Monday evening. “She was very desperate before the 2013 Worlds, but could not qualify in the 800m,” the ‘Payyoli Express’ added.

Jaisha and Khushbir make the cut

OP Jaisha who had clocked a personal best timing of 15:18.30s in women’s 5000m in Incheon too entered the elite bracket of athletes making it to the Worlds. The qualifying mark for the 5000m is 15:20s.

Also making the cut was India’s talented race walker Khushbir Kaur who clinched the silver in 20km walk at the Asiad. The 21-year-old who had scripted history at Incheon qualified by virtue of her timing of 1:33:07, which was a new national record.

Seema Punia has to wait

However, the country’s top female discus thrower Seema Punia, who won the Asian Games gold, failed to join the trio for the Worlds. In spite of having done better than the entry standard, Punia could not make it as her event was held on 29th September, two days prior to the opening of the qualification period.

Seema and other athletes would have to try their luck at other meets leading up to the World Championships.

Qualification period

The qualification period for the race walks is from January 1, 2014 to August 10, 2015. The marathon, 10,000m, relays and all other combined events also have the same qualification period.

For the other events, it is from October 1, 2014 to August 10, 2015.
