A late goal by Brazilian forward Gustavo Dos Santos saw the Delhi Dynamos defeat the home side, FC Pune City 1-0 at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium in Pune. With the win, the Dynamos pocket three full points and stay alive in the race for the fourth spot. Pune, on the other hand, could not keep the winning momentum going as they slipped to the sixth place. The defeat left the crowd disappointed as this was the last home game for Pune City FC.
First Half- Chances Missed On Both Ends
The winner of this match would go a step closer to booking a semi-final berth. Pune’s Korean forward Park Kwang-II initiated many attacks but could not find a finisher for his crosses. Dudu Omagbemi and Kostas Katsouranis troubled the Delhi defenders but none of them could get past Kristof Van Hout, the keeper.
Jermaine Pennant of FC Pune City fired a well directed shot which beat the goalkeeper but to his surprise, the ball bounced off the post. It would later on prove to be a costly miss for the home side. For the visitors, Mads Junker had a corner headed his way. All he had to do was to put in a foot to guide the ball into the post. The Pune defenders did well to keep Junker under pressure and deny him from scoring.
Second Half- Santos Screamer Seals The Deal for Delhi Dynamos
The second half also began with the same intensity by both the teams. The home side had slowly started taking control and enjoyed good ball possession. The Delhi Dynamos were up to the challenge and right-back Adil Khan kept the Pune attackers at bay with some sublime defending.
Dos Santos was still a threat as he was a regular customer in Pune’s 18 yard box. His persistence finally yielded him a goal in the 88th minute when he ran down the right flank and cut through a defender to fire a shot into the top corner of the far post. The goal was scored from a difficult angle and Santos silenced the home crowd with that shot. Pune pressed on for an equalizer in the remaining few minutes but all their efforts went in vain.
Both the teams have their next fixtures on December 9. Delhi Dynamos play in another must win game against leaders Chennaiyin FC while FC Pune City would look to somehow scrape through to the fourth spot. They play Kerala Blasters who are also in strong contention for the semi-finals.
