The 2015 tennis season gets underway in just a few days with the Aircel Chennai Open marking the beginning of the new tennis calendar. Which means it’s a good time to look into our crystal ball and see what 2015 has in store for Indian tennis. Here are our Top 5 predictions for Indian tennis in 2015.
Prediction #1 – Sania will win a Women’s Doubles Grand Slam
Sania may not have reached a women’s doubles Grand Slam final since 2011, but 2014 was certainly the best season of her career so far. She broke into the Top 5 of the world rankings for the first time, won a third mixed doubles Grand Slam title at the US Open (this time with Brazil’s Bruno Soares) and won the season-ending WTA Tour Finals in Singapore (the biggest title outside of the four Grand Slams) with Cara Black.
Sania has set herself two big goals in 2015 – to win a women’s doubles slam and to attain the Doubles World No. 1 ranking. The 28-year-old from Hyderabad will have a new partner in Su-Wei Hsieh, already a two-time Grand Slam winner with Shuai Peng, in 2015 and her first goal seems close to fruition. Sania is too good a doubles player to end her career without winning one. As far as her goal to become No. 1, while it surely remains within the realm of possibility, it will be a much tougher ask. Sania will need to ensure she and her partner remain injury-free throughout the year and find their chemistry quickly Down Under.
