The 2015 tennis season is officially set to kick off in a few days which makes this a perfect time to look back at the year gone by. It was an interesting year for the sport in India and surely there’s no doubt that Sania Mirza was the headliner when it came to Indian tennis in 2014.
Sania Mirza is Unanimous Choice for Indian Tennis Athlete of the Year
When Sania gave up her singles ambitions to concentrate on her doubles career, many wondered if she made the right move. But the Indian silenced her critics after compiling her best season on the circuit – winning the prestigious season-ending WTA Tour Finals with partner Cara Black, one of three titles for the duo in the year besides four runner-up finishes. Mirza ended the season as World No. 6 after briefly breaking into the Top 5 for the first time in her career and also won her third Grand Slam mixed doubles title at the US Open, this time with Bruno Soares (Sania only needs a Wimbledon mixed title to complete a career Grand Slam in the mixed). Sania also won a gold medal in the mixed (with Saketh Myneni) and a bronze in the women’s doubles (with Prarthana Thombare) at the Asian Games and opened the doors to her academy in Hyderabad where she hopes to provide world-class training and coaching facilities to talented juniors from the country. And she did all this while battling constant rumours of trouble in her marriage and an ugly controversy questioning her Indian-ness which left her in tears on national television. If she remains injury-free, 2015 could be an even bigger year for her. But for now, Sania surely gets our vote hands down for the Indian Tennis Athlete of the Year.
