The Indian hockey team’s Asiad gold medal winning effort last year and string of good performances against Australia and at the Champions Trophy have been possible due to good teamwork and some sterling individual brilliance. Here are our top four Indian hockey players of 2014:

#1. PR Sreejesh- The Wall Of The Indian Hockey Team:

PR Sreejesh celebrates with teammates after winning the gold medal match against Pakistan at the Asian games 2014

While hockey is majorly a game between forwards and defenders, its the Indian goalkeeper who occupies the #1 spot in our top four. PR Sreejesh has been in good form right from the start of the season. Sreejesh pulled off some great saves to keep India in the hunt during many matches. His two saves in the penalty shootout of the Asian games final vs Pakistan helped India win their first gold medal after 18 years.
Career: International caps- 121

#2. Akashdeep Singh- The Young Sensation:

Akashdeep Singh has grown into one of team India’s mainstays at a very early age.

Akashdeep is just 20 years old and is already one of the star strikers of the senior Indian hockey team. Focused and agile, the Punjabi forward has had a brilliant season. What makes him a better forward is his rate of conversion. He hardly misses any loose balls and most of his shots are on target. His best performance of the year came in the final match of the 4-match test series against Australia where he scored two brilliant goals to guide India to a 3-1 win.
Career: International Caps- 62, International goals- 24
