The Australian Open, the first of the four tennis Grand slams is off to a flyer as we saw some of the best tennis players in the world play their first round matches. Nothing could be better than a beautiful Monday morning in the beautiful city of Melbourne for things to get started. India’s only qualifier in the men’s singles, Yuki Bhambri, lost to sixth seed and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the first round. Here are the results of some important matches which were played on day 1:
#1. Yuki Bhambri (IND) lost to Andy Murray (GBR)
Yuki Bhambri, who put up a superb performance in the qualifiers to break into the main draw faced a tough opponent in Andy Murray. The Scot cruised past Yuki Bhambri and comfortably entered the next round with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. The loss would not mean much for the Indian youngster as it has been a great learning experience playing against one of the modern day tennis greats. Here’s his reaction on twitter:

#2. Rafael Nadal (ESP) bt Mikhail Youzhny (RUS)
After an injury break, Rafael Nadal is back into his groove as he defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets- 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The Spaniard looks very determined and he has a long way to go. Youzhny would be slightly disappointed with his game as he was expected to throw a tough challenge against his opponent.
#3. Roger Federer (SUI) bt Yen Hsun Lu (CHINESE TAIPEI)
The saying “old is gold” has been proven right by Roger Federer time and again. The Swiss tennis ace registered his 1001st victory earlier on Monday by beating Yen Hsun Lu in straight sets. The score read 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.
#4. Ana Ivanovic (SER) lost to Lucie Hradecka (CZE)
Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic crashed out of the Australian open after losing to Lucie Hradecka from Czech Republic. The latter is a doubles specialist and a qualifier from Czech Republic and looks like a very strong contender. She won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
#5. Maria Sharapova (RUS) bt Petra Martic (CRO)
Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, who has been in great touch, opened her Australian open campaign with win. She defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4, 6-1.
Stars to watch out for on Tuesday, day 2:
Defending champion Novak Djokovic will begin his quest to defend his title on Tuesday. Chennai open champion Stan Wawrinka, local boy Lleyton Hewitt, the Williams sisters , US Open runner-up, Nishikori and Victoria Azarenka are some other big names to watch.
