Expectations High From Indian Doubles Stars at Australian Open

The draw for the doubles events at the Australian Open has been released and after a successful weekend where Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza picked up doubles titles, hopes are high for Indian tennis fans for the fortnight ahead.

Sania Mirza Seeded Second For Women’s Doubles

Sania Mirza is seeded second in the women’s doubles draw with new partner Su-Wei Hsieh and they meet Maria Irigoyen/ Romina Oprandi in the first round. Mirza could run into previous partner Cara Black in the second round. Black and Saisai Zheng meet Gabriela Dabrowski/ Alicja Rosolska in the first round. Mirza/ Hsieh are in the same quarter as fifth seeds Raquel Kops-Jones/ Abigail Spears and could run into the fourth seeds Martina Hingis/ Flavia Pennetta in the semi-finals. Top seeds Sara Errani/ Roberta Vinci and 13-time Grand Slam winners Venus and Serena Williams are in the other half of the draw.

Bopanna Seeded Seventh while Paes Seeded 10th

In the men’s doubles draw, Sydney champions Rohan Bopanna/ Daniel Nestor are seeded seventh and meet Marcos Baghdatis/ Marinko Matosevic in the first round. Auckland champions Leander Paes/ Raven Klaasen are seeded 10th in the draw and meet Rajeev Ram/ Scott Lipsky in the first round. The Indo-South African duo are projected to meet fifth seeds Bruno Soares/ Alexander Peya in the third round and third seeds Marcel Granollers/ Marc Lopez in the quarter-finals.

Mahesh Bhupathi makes a comeback to Grand Slam tennis with Austrian partner Jurgen Melzer. The duo are unseeded in the draw and meet Deigo Schwartzman/ Horacio Zeballos in the first round and could meet the top seeded Bryan Brothers in the third round.
