Saina Nehwal remained on course for a successful defence of her title at the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold as she entered the semi-finals of the Lucknow tournament on Friday. Joining her in the semis were PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Parupalli Kashyap and HS Prannoy. In doubles, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa remain in the hunt for the title.
Saina Nehwal – The top seed defeated compatriot Arundhati Pantawane 21-18, 21-17 for a place in the semi-finals. She will next take on fourth seed Nichaon Jindapon of Thailand. The Thai shuttler ended the hopes of Indian PC Thulasi as she emerged victorious 21-16, 20-22, 21-12.
PV Sindhu – The double World Championship medallist rebounded from a devastating opening game in which she managed to win just 8 points. The 19-year-old put up a strong performance from thereon to beat sixth-seeded Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 8-21, 21-11, 21-14.
Sindhu will meet the reigning World Champion Carolina Marin for a place in Sunday’s summit clash in a rematch of their World Championship semi final. The second seeded Spaniard beat Chochuwong Pornpawee 21-11, 21-13 in the quarters on Friday.
Kidambi Srikanth – Top seed Kidambi Srikanth won as his opponent, Wei Feng Chong retired after the second game with the score reading 17-21, 21-12. The China Open champion will next challenge great friend and practice partner HS Prannoy for a place in the final. Fourth seeded Prannoy overcame another Indian, RMV Gurusaidutt 21-18, 21-19 in the quarters.
Parupalli Kashyap – Commonwealth Games gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap put up an emphatic performance to get the better of tenth seed Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore 21-18, 21-9. He will square off against second seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. Axelsen prevented an Indian sweep of semi-finals as he beat B Sai Praneeth 15-21, 21-17, 21-16.
