After a heart-breaking draw in their first match, the Punjab Warriors put up another top-notch performance on Saturday. Punjab Warriors defeated the Kalinga Lancers with a score of 4-2, at the International hockey stadium at Mohali, their home turf. Punjab Warriors’ captain Jamie Dwyer scored two magnificent goals, which were the chief highlights of the match. Apart from these two goals a penalty corner by Sandeep Singh and a field goal by Dharamvir Singh added to the home side’s kitty. Lalitkumar Upadhyay and Gurjinder Singh scored for Kalinga Lancers.
1st quarter: Lalitkumar Upadhyay scores early to put Kalinga ahead of Punjab Warriors
With both the teams experiencing a goal fest in their previous encounters, a quick-paced game was on the cards. Kalinga Lancers’ forward Lalitkumar Upadhyay opened scoring early in the 8th minute through a spectacular field goal. The Indian forward appeared in a great form and the Punjab Warriors’ defense had to make constant adjustments to mark and cover Upadhyay. The 1st quarter ended with the visitors gaining an important 1-0 lead.
2nd quarter: The Jamie Dwyer show
Punjab Warriors began the 2nd quarter with a more aggressive approach and it earned them an early penalty corner. Australian forward Jamie Dwyer flawlessly converted the penalty corner into a splendid goal and equalized. Punjab Warriors didn’t hold back after the goal as they continued their attacking game. In the 28th minute, Dwyer carried the ball inside the shooting circle and struck another fantastic field goal. The five time FIH world player of the year has been able to hit top form quickly. At half time, Punjab Warriors walked into the dugout satisfied, with a 2-1 lead.
3rd and 4th quarter: Punjab Warriors build lead
The second half of the match was all about Punjab Warriors’ dominance. After Jamie Dwyer’s double strike, they added two more goals. The first goal came from India’s star drag-flicker Sandeep Singh who added another goal to his tally after scoring from a penalty corner. To seal the victory, Dharamvir Singh, cut past the defenders and scored from a powerful hit into the goal in the 50th minute. Few minutes later, Gurjinder Singh hit a consolation goal through a penalty corner. The final score read Punjab Warriors 4-2 Kalinga Lancers. Jamie Dwyer was adjudged the man of the match.
