The Indian Sports arena got its fair share of honor when the Padma Awards were announced on Sunday.
Padma Bhushan for Satpal Singh
Wrestler-turned-coach Satpal Singh was felicitated with the Padma Bhushan award for his contributions in wrestling. The 59-year-old was an instrumental figure in the sport for India throughout the 70s and 80s. He has an Asian Games Gold and Bronze to his name but most of Satpal’s success came as a coach.
He is responsible for some of the current crop of Indian wrestlers including the two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar.
Padma Shri for Sardar Singh, PV Sindhu , Saba Anjum and Arunima
Meanwhile, Indian Men’s hockey team captain Sardar Singh was given the Padma Shri. He captained the side which ended the 16 year gold drought in Asian Games and also led the team to a Commonwealth Silver.
Apart from Sardar Singh, Badminton star PV Sindhu and former women’s hockey player Saba Anjum were also conferred the Padma Shri. The other recipients of this prestigious award included Arunima Singh who is the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest and India’s Women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj.
One of the most notable rejections during the Padma Awards was that of Saina Nehwal.
