The Ranchi Rays hosted Delhi Waveriders in the first match of the republic day double-header. In a tight, defense-intensive game at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, both teams settled for a 2-2 draw. This is Delhi Waveriders’ second draw on the trot and they are yet to win a game in the HIL.
1st quarter: Akashdeep puts Delhi Waveriders in command
Some remarkable skills from the Delhi Waveriders were witnessed by the Ranchi crowd. In the 3rd minute, Indian forward Akashdeep Singh dribbled his way into the shooting circle beating all defenders and scored a superb goal. Thus, Delhi Waveriders were up and ahead early in the game. The ball possession rate was dominated by the Ranchi Rays, but the team failed to convert any opportunities in the first quarter.
2nd quarter: Both teams score from penalty corners
The second quarter of the match witnessed some excellent attacks and counter-attacks by both Ranchi Rays and Delhi Waveriders but the defenders pulled off a better show for both the teams by restricting each other from doing any damage. Delhi Waveriders had three back to back penalty corner opportunities. While they failed in converting the first two, Delhi Waveriders’ experienced midfielder Danish Mujtaba scored in the third penalty corner as a rebound shot and helped the team take the lead to 2-0 in the game. Nick Budgeon of Ranchi Rays perfectly converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute and reduced the margin to 2-1.
Mandeep finds an equalizer for Ranchi Rays
In the third quarter of the match, the home team Ranchi Rays were back in the game when Mandeep Singh sneaked into the Delhi Waveriders’ defence area and flicked in a field goal in the 35th minute to level the scores at 2-2 .
4th quarter: Defenders prevent further damage, game ends in draw
The fourth quarter of the match witnessed high quality defending from both Delhi Waveriders and Ranchi Rays. As both the teams could not find a winning goal, they settled for a 2-2 draw and were awarded 2 points each.
