Day 2 was a day of mixed emotions at the National Games venue. While Jitu Rai impressed with his performance with the pistol, the air grew sombre when news came in of the tragic death of a Maharashtrian netball player.

Services rowed away to glory on the second day of the National Games. They dominated in the men’s category, sweeping gold in all five of the events. Om Prakash, clocking 7:19.00 secs, clinched Gold in the Men’s Single Scull 2000m, followed by Uttar Pradesh’s Aravind Rana (7:26.00 secs) and Punjab’s Daljit Singh (7:36.00 secs).
In the men’s Coxswain Less pairs 2000m event, Services’ Jegan Sarkar and Pandurang Mohite grabbed gold (7:03.00 secs ), while Telangana (7:11.00 secs) and Punjab (7:14.00 secs) came in second and third respectively. Services continued their domination in the Vembanad Lake, Alappuzha clinching gold in the Coxless Fours and Eights, while the hosts impressed in the parallel women’s event.
Bhagwan Singh and Nayab Rasool, in the Men’s Lightweight Double sculls, and compatriots Pandurang Mohite and S Jagan in the Men’s Coxless Pairs, bagged gold.
In the women’s 10m platform diving, Maharashtra’s Hrutika P Shriram took grabbed gold ( with 230.65 points) while compatriot Deepti Panwar (221.75 ) took silver and West Bengal’s Tanuka Dhara (181.65) took bronze.
As predicted, Sajan Prakash shone again. After yesterday’s impressive performance, today in the 1500m freestyle event, the local lad took gold, clocking 15:55.78 secs, creating a new meet record along the way. National Champion Saurabh Sangwekar settled for silver (16:7.12 secs) and Kerala’s Anand A S took bronze (16:20.72 secs). The 18 year old Sajan, was also part of the 4 x 100 m relay freestyle team that took gold yesterday.
In the 200m breaststroke event, Madhya Pradesh’s Sandeep Sejwal took home gold, clocking 2:13.53 secs to better his own record, while Kerala’s Anoop Augustine and Arun S came grabbed second and third places.
In the 200m breaststroke women’s event, Gujarat’s Kalyani Saxena took gold, while Maharashtra’s Rutuja Udeshi and Karnataka’s Saloni Dalal collected silver and bronze respectively.The 4x100m relay medley saw the hosts clinch a silver in the men’s event, tailing after Madhya Pradesh. Tomorrow’s 50m freestyle and 400m individual medley are events to watch out for.
In the day’s Table Tennis events, Tamil Nadu beat Gujarat 3-2 in the men’s event while Maharashtra got the better of West Bengal in the women’s category.
Up to 58 kg women : Odisha’s Minati Sethi took gold, while Haryana’s Harleen Kaur took Silver and Manipur’s Sumanbala Devi settled for bronze.
Up to 62 kg men: Chhattisgarh’s Rustam Sarang, Services’ Swapnil Ghagare and Odisha’s Susant Sahu took gold, silver and bronze respectively.
Up to 69 kg men: Assam’s Papul Changmai, Andhra Pradesh’s Ramakrishna Moida and Tamil Nadu’s Rengaraj R topped the tables.
Golden Day For Haryana in Wrestling
It was Haryana vs Delhi all through the day in wrestling today.
In the freestyle women’s 75 kg wrestling, Delhi’s Jyoti overpowered Haryana’s Nikki to clinch gold. The Greco Roman men’s 71 kg category saw another Delhi vs Haryana fight, but this time Shri Bhagwan ensured that the results were different. Freestyle women’s 58 kg category saw the lady from Haryana, Sarita, getting the better of Delhi’s Kamlesh. Freestyle men’s 61 kg saw Haryana’s Sonu beat Services’ Harfool Singh.To seal it off, Somveer, in the freestyle men’s 86 kg category brought another Gold for Haryana, beating Avdhesh Yadav of Chhattisgarh.
So a good day for Haryana and Services, aided by the multiple gold medals in wrestling and rowing respectively. Here is the medal tally on Day 2 of the National Games.
